Original Medicare

Original Medicare, which includes both  Part A and Part B, forms the foundation of Medicare coverage. It's the traditional fee-for-service program offered directly through the federal government.

Part A – Hospital Insurance

Coverage: Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Cost: For most people, Part A is premium-free if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. However, there might be deductibles and co-payments.

Enrollment: Automatic for those who are already receiving Social Security benefits. Others need to enroll manually.

Part B – Medical Insurance

Coverage: Helps cover certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

Cost: There's a monthly premium for Part B, which might vary based on income. Some individuals may be eligible for coverage with different dual-enrollment plans.

Enrollment: Automatic for some, while others need to sign up.

Why It Matters

Original Medicare provides essential coverage for a wide range of medical services. However, it doesn't cover everything. That's where additional plans like Medigap and Medicare Advantage come into play.
